    Oriental Beauty Tea

    (White Tip Oolong Tea)

The most popular export item in Europe at that time was "Pekoe Oolong" or "Oriental Beauty Tea". Because of its unique fruity and honey aroma, this tea became a hot commodity in the international market. The tea soup of Oriental Beauty Tea is amber in color after brewing. The tea leaves are bitten by small green leafhoppers, and the tea leaves have a special floral and fruity honey aroma. The appearance of Oriental Beauty tea is cord-like, with two leaves in one heart. Because its tea buds are short and white, Oriental Beauty tea is also called Pekoe Oolong. Oolong refers to the degree of fermentation of tea leaves.

There is a story like this: A hundred years ago, a British businessman presented this tea to the Queen of England. Her Majesty brewed it in a crystal cup and watched the buds of pekoe with one heart and one leaf dancing in the water with the steam and was impressed by its unique charm. I can't put it down because of its fragrance. It's produced in Taiwan, the treasure island of Formosa in the East, so it's named "Oriental Beauty Tea". Because Oriental Beauty Tea became famous early and is produced in many areas, it has different names in various places. It is also known as Sufeng Tea, Fenfeng Tea and Fushou Tea. Formerly known as Fanzhuang Oolong, Hakkas also call it Puffing Tea, Yanfeng Tea or Danzai Tea.

The appearance of Oriental Beauty tea is cord-like, with one heart and two leaves; the tea buds are short and white, so Oriental Beauty tea is also called Baihao Oolong.

More fragrant after being bitten by insects.

What exactly is the insect that creates Oriental Beauty Tea? The little green leafhopper (Little Green Leafhopper) is a small flying insect that only appears in ecologically sound tea gardens. The nymphs and adults of the green leaf insect absorb nutrient solution from the young buds and leaves, causing the development of the tea buds to be blocked and turn yellow-green. In severe cases, the tea buds will curl up until they finally fall off. The small green leafhopper is originally a so-called "pest", but to tea farmers, it is an extremely precious good insect. The more "ravaged" the tea garden is by it (infested with locusts), the better, because of the precious honey fragrance of the Oriental Beauty. Or the fruity aroma comes from the damaged tea buds. The so-called "蝝" is a Hakka word, which means the tea leaves were bitten by insects.

Tea buds after insect bites will increase the activity of "tea polyphenols" while recovering from the wound, resulting in a significant increase in catechin content. Most of Oriental Beauty is harvested ten days before and after the Dragon Boat Festival in the lunar calendar every year. Its biggest feature is that no insecticides or herbicides can be used during the cultivation process of tea greens. In addition, because it must be picked manually, plus Oriental Beauty's The tea buds are so tender and small that even a skilled tea picker can only make 10 kilograms for four people in half a day, which shows the high cost. In addition, it generally takes about 1,000 to 2,000 tea buds to make one pound (600 grams) of tea, but Oriental Beauty requires 3,000 to 4,000 tea buds for the same weight because it is all small heart buds, so the price is high. No less.

Since Oriental Beauty is called pekoe "oolong", it is naturally closely related to the semi-fermented tea that Taiwanese love to drink - oolong tea. In terms of tea classification, those that have not been fermented are called green tea, those that are 100% fully fermented are called black tea, and those in between are called oolong tea. Because the tea leaves and tea soup are red in color when brewed, some people mistakenly think that Oriental Beauty tea belongs to the black tea category. However, in fact, although Oriental Beauty tea has a fermentation rate of 60~80%, it has not reached 100% fermentation, so it is different from Baozhong tea, mountain tea, Like Tieguanyin, it belongs to the oolong tea category. At present, the mainstream tea in Taiwan - Dongding Oolong or High Mountain Oolong has a fermentation level of about 30%, while Oriental Beauty Tea has the highest level of fermentation among Taiwan's semi-fermented teas.

The tea-making process of Oriental Beauty is delicate and complicated. Because it is made from tender heart buds, the tea is rich in amino acids and has a sweet and refreshing taste. In addition, because the green tea is fried and dried at low temperature, there is no roasting smell, so the tea soup is neither bitter nor astringent. In addition, due to heavy fermentation, the appearance of the finished tea is white, green, yellow, red, and brown, with five colors alternately and colorful, so it is also called "five-color tea". The biggest characteristic of the aroma of Oriental Beauty tea is that it has a long and delicate natural honey aroma (or ripe fruit aroma). Currently, only Darjeeling black tea and Oriental Beauty tea are known to have this natural honey aroma in the world. Darjeeling black tea is known as it is the top black tea in the world. It has always been loved by the British royal family. The British respectfully call it "Champagne Black Tea". Oriental Beauty Tea was also favored by the British royal family and was called "Champagne Oolong or Oriental Beauty Tea".
